Pink Noise May Help the Brain Clean Itself During Sleep

Deep sleep is not just a period of inactivity. During sleep, waves of cerebrospinal fluid move through the brain and help clear metabolic waste that accumulates throughout the day.
MIT researchers recently tested whether those waves could be influenced using sound. Fourteen healthy volunteers slept while researchers monitored their brain activity and delivered extremely short bursts of gentle pink noise at precise moments during their slow-wave sleep.
The carefully timed sounds strengthened the brain's slow electrical waves and produced larger cerebrospinal fluid waves. That does not mean playing a pink-noise playlist overnight will produce the same result. The intervention depended on real-time monitoring and precise timing, and researchers have not yet shown that it improves memory or long-term brain health.
Takeaway: Sleep quality may involve more than simply how many hours we spend in bed. For now, the basics still matter most: enough sleep, a dark room and a consistent schedule.
Stress
Music May Help Your Brain Recover From Stress

Putting on music after a stressful day might be doing more than improving your mood. Researchers placed healthy adults through a stressful, time-pressured mental arithmetic task and then compared recovery while listening to relaxing music or soothing water sounds. People listening to music recovered faster on several measures, including heart rate, sweating, cortisol and positive mood.
Brain imaging also showed changes in communication between regions involved in hearing, internal body sensations and sensory processing. Interestingly, the effect appeared strongest during recovery from stress rather than when music was played beforehand.
Takeaway: Your recovery ritual matters. A calming playlist after a stressful meeting, commute or workout may be a surprisingly simple way to help shift your body out of stress mode.
Women’s Health
We May Have Overestimated How Much the Menstrual Cycle Changes Exercise Performance

For years, women were often excluded from exercise research partly because fluctuating hormones were assumed to make their physiology too variable to study cleanly. That assumption is increasingly being challenged.
Researchers reviewing evidence around menstrual-cycle tracking in athletes found that claims linking specific cycle phases to meaningful changes in performance or injury risk remain much weaker than popular fitness advice often suggests. Separate exercise physiology work has also found that many cardiovascular responses to exercise do not meaningfully fluctuate day to day across the menstrual cycle.
Cycle awareness can still be useful for understanding symptoms and individual patterns. The concern is turning broad assumptions about hormones into rigid training rules that may not actually fit the individual woman.
Takeaway: Your own symptoms and performance are more useful than a generic app telling you how you are supposed to feel on a particular cycle day.

Gut
We’re Buying More Probiotics. Our Diets Haven’t Caught Up.

Interest in the microbiome has exploded, and supplement shelves reflect it. Our eating habits tell a different story. An analysis of U.S. data found that probiotic supplement use among adults increased 287% between 2009 and 2023. Among people under 20, use increased 786%.
During roughly the same period, fiber intake barely moved. Consumption of foods naturally containing high levels of microbes increased only slightly. That matters because supporting the gut microbiome involves more than adding bacteria through a capsule. Fiber-rich plants provide the material many beneficial gut microbes use to produce compounds involved in digestive and metabolic health.
Takeaway: Gut health does not need to begin in the supplement aisle. Beans, berries, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and fermented foods can do a lot of the heavy lifting.
Around the Nest
🚶 More steps aren't the only thing that may matter. Researchers found that different combinations of walking volume and pace were associated with lower mortality in a large study.
🌙 Your bedroom may be brighter than your body wants. Nighttime light above surprisingly low levels was associated with changes in heart structure and function in new research.
🥤 Sugar substitutes may not train us to crave more sweetness. Yearlong trials found little evidence that non-nutritive sweeteners increased sweet preference or weight in a new review.
🍎 Snacking itself may not be the problem. In a yearlong study of Dutch millennials, 64% of foods eaten between meals fell within national healthy-eating guidelines, according to the research findings.
🧠 A workout changes more than your muscles. Acute aerobic exercise altered patterns of brain activity during cognitive tasks in a recent exercise study.
